A Police officer has been left in ia critical condition after he was stabbed repeatedly by a man armed with a machete in east London.

The man that attacked the officer is believed to be aged in his 50s. The incident, which took place at around midnight, ensued following a routine vehicle stop in Leyton. 

The driver of a van failed to stop for police when requested to do so on Coopers Lane / Leyton High Road. The vehicle then stopped and the attack took place. 

The male officer, who is aged in his 30s, used a Taser to subdue the suspect.

Another officer arrested the suspect at the scene on suspicion of GBH, Met Police say. A crime scene remains in place.

The officers condition has been described as critical but stable.
