There was a large police presence on Caledonian Road in Islington last night following reports of ‘men armed with knives’.
Police (including armed police) were called to reports of men reportedly armed with knives just prior to 10.00pm and pursued a man who fled the scene onto a nearby railway line. The man was then caught and arrested for possession of an offensive weapon and trespassing onto train lines. An S60 was put in place.
Section 60 of the Criminal Justice and Public Order Act 1994 allows a police officer to stop and search a person without suspicion. Section 60 stops and searches can take place in an area which has been authorised by a senior police officer on the basis of their reasonable belief that violence has or is about to occur, and where it is expedient to prevent it or search people for a weapon if one was involved in the incident.
